An Elkhart father is in jail while his son is being treated at Riley Children’s Hospital for a serious head injury police believe he caused.

Officers arrested Virgil Jones, 25, after being called to a home around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday on the 200 block of Superior Blvd., according to the Elkhart Police Department.

Investigators say Jones dropped off another child with the mother, telling her he needed to take the other child to the hospital. When he arrived, the mother of the child discovered her son bleeding from the head, according to police.

She called 911 immediately. The child was initially taken to Elkhart General Hospital. However, the boy’s injuries were deemed so severe, he needed to be treated at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

Detectives believe Jones acted out in anger and gave the child the head injury as a result.

Jones is being held without bond at Elkhart County Jail, charged with battery with a serious bodily injury with the victim under the age of 14.
