LaPorte train collision kills woman despite being able to escape truck

A woman is dead despite being able to escape her stuck pickup truck before a train hit it.

LaPorte County officials are still trying to put together how the train collision exactly happened, according to WSBT.

What apparently did happen was that the woman got her Ford truck stuck at the Tyler Street crossing in LaPorte just before 8 a.m. Friday.

She ended up trapped between the crossing arms that came down on either side of her. She got her truck caught on the rails and, seeing no other alternative, got her and her son out of the truck.

Unfortunately, it appears it was too late for the woman, who was hit by the truck after the train hit it, according to LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan.

She ended up 150 feet west of the crossing, along with the truck. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The boy is expected to be ok, but was taken to LaPorte Hospital, according to Sullivan.

LaPorte detectives will review a camera on the train to determine the exact cause of death.
