GARY, Ind. (AP) — A Lake County, Indiana, sheriff’s deputy faces 14 charges including driving while intoxicated after a hit-and-run crash in Gary left an Illinois man hospitalized.
Indiana State Police said Tuesday that Lt. Guy Mikulich faces four felony charges and 10 misdemeanors stemming from the Sunday afternoon crash.
Police say 37-year-old Derrick Dircks of Frankfort, Illinois, was outside his minivan parked along a street following the Gary Air Show when it was struck by Mikulich’s unmarked car. Dircks has been released after being hospitalized with serious injuries.
Gary police later stopped Mikulich, and a blood draw showed he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 percent, or nearly twice the level to be considered intoxicated.
The sheriff’s department has placed Mikulich on paid administrative leave. He doesn’t have a published home telephone number.
