Girl dies after early morning house fire in South Bend

A young girl died after a house fire that broke out in South Bend early Thursday morning, May 26.

Firefighters found the girl unresponsive inside the burning house in the 1500 block of O’Brien Street in South Bend just after 1:30 a.m., according to the South Bend Fire Department. She was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Stuffed animals honoring the girl were placed in front of the house by 8:15 a.m. Thursday.

Four other people escaped the fire and are being treated at a hospital, but it’s not clear how seriously they were injured.

The fire was extinguished by 2:30 a.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
