Group in Lafayette protests Indiana's ban on Syrian refugees

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — About 70 people marched from Purdue University to downtown Lafayette to show their opposition to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s attempt to try to keep any new Syrian refugees from arriving in the state.

Wes Bishop, a Purdue student and community organizer with Purdue Social Justice Coalition, told the (Lafayette) Journal & Courier the ban evokes Islamophobia.

The march and rally Friday were organized by the Lafayette chapter of Indiana Moral Mondays, Purdue Student Justice Coalition, Students for Justice in Palestine at Purdue, and Lafayette Area Peace Coalition.

Pence’s last month ordered Indiana state agencies to stop helping with the resettlement of Syrian refugees. That move was in response to the deadly Paris attacks. The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana has filed a lawsuit challenging that order.
