Police fatally shoot suspected gunman during chase in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Indiana State Police say officers fatally shot a suspected gunman in the northeastern Indiana city of Fort Wayne.

Police say state and city officers came across the man with a handgun as they responded to reports of a man firing shots at an Auto Zone auto supply store about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Police said in a news release early Monday that the man fled on foot when the officers arrived.

State police say officers chased the man who then turned and fired on them. Officers returned fire, shooting the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the suspect’s initial gunfire struck a man inside the Auto Zone who was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
