Allen has been in custody since Indiana State Police announced his arrest in October 2022. He has spent considerable time in “the hole,” or solitary confinement, which his attorneys argue has caused mental breakdowns and should render his confessions unusable in his defense.
Allen’s legal team also says that prison guards lack the necessary expertise to assess his condition and that their testimony violates a court rule regarding expert witnesses.
The trial begins with jury selection on Monday in Allen County. After being selected, jurors will be transported to Carroll County for the proceedings, expected to last three days.
According to multiple media reports, the month-long trial is projected to cost taxpayers several million dollars.
