Serious vehicle/buggy collision near Middlebury leaves one person in critical condition

A Goshen man was hospitalized in critical condition after a vehicle/buggy crash near Middlebury.

The collision happened around 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, on County Road 28, just east of County Road 133.

Investigators say a Chevrolet Cruze, driven by a 22-year-old Middlebury man, collided with a buggy operated by 27-year-old Goshen man. The Chevrolet, traveling eastbound, sustained heavy front-end damage, while the buggy suffered rear-end and right-side damage.

According to the police report, the driver was distracted by his phone and failed to notice the buggy ahead of him, resulting in a rear-end collision. The man in the buggy was ejected and suffered life-threatening head and facial injuries, temporarily losing consciousness.

He was rushed to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment. The Middlebury man cited for distracted driving.
