A joint effort between Indiana State Police, South Bend Police, and Mishawaka Police resulted in the arrest of a man who fled from a traffic stop on foot in South Bend.

Around 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, when an Indiana State Police trooper pulled over a gold Chevrolet on Colfax Avenue for a broken taillight. While speaking to the female driver, the trooper discovered she was driving with a suspended license.

The passenger, later identified as Jeremiah Johnson, 23, of South Bend, provided a false name. The trooper soon determined Johnson had three active felony warrants for theft.

When officers attempted to arrest Johnson, he fled on foot. Mishawaka Police and a K9 unit tracked him to a tree on LaSalle Avenue, where he was hiding. Johnson was taken to a hospital for minor injuries from a taser and K9 contact before being booked into the St. Joseph County Jail.

During intake, officers found suspected fentanyl and cocaine hidden on Johnson. He now faces charges for resisting arrest, false information, possession of narcotics, and the outstanding warrants.

The driver fled the scene and remains at large.
