Multi-vehicle crash in Elkhart leaves two people injured, Driver arrested for OWI

A four-vehicle collision at the intersection of County Road 19 and County Road 14 left two people injured and one driver in custody for operating while intoxicated.
The crash occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, when Bryan Garfias, 22, of Elkhart, was driving a GMC Terrain southbound.
Investigators say Garfias rear-ended a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a Goshen woman.
The impact caused a chain reaction, pushing the Goshen woman’s vehicle into a Subaru Ascent driven by an Elkhart woman, which then struck a Chevrolet HHR.
Garfias, who police say was intoxicated, fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended and incarcerated for OWI and fleeing the scene of a personal injury accident.
The driver of the Chevrolet HHR, who remains unidentified, also fled the scene, driving westbound on County Road 14.
The two women were transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment. One suffered neck, shoulder, and right arm pain, while the other complained of neck pain.
Garfias was cited for multiple violations, and Ayala received a citation for never having received a driver’s license.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to search for the driver of the Chevrolet HHR.
