Elkhart man arrested in connection with armed robbery

On September 25, 2024, the Elkhart Police Department arrested Adam Hoopingarner, 44 years old of Elkhart, in connection with an armed robbery that occurred on Sept. 18th at the Phillips 66 gas station at 2400 S Main St, Elkhart. Yesterday the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office filed formal charges against Hoopingarner in Elkhart Circuit Court. EPD was able to positively identify the subject after requesting and receiving tips from the public.

On September 18, 2024, at approximately 12:22 a.m., officers dispatched to 2400 S Main St (Phillips 66 gas station) in reference to a robbery in progress. Employees reported that an unknown male subject entered the gas station, pointed a long gun, and demanded more gas. The male subject then left the scene before police arrival. The Elkhart Police Department obtained surveillance footage of the male suspect and the vehicle that left the scene, and shared these images with the public in an attempt to identify the suspect. Thanks to several submitted and verified tips, the Elkhart Police Department identified the male suspect and arrested him on September 25, 2024, in the area of E Hively Ave/Morton Ave in connection with this investigation.

Male suspect, Adam Hoopingarner, 44 years old of Elkhart, was booked into the Elkhart County Jail. An Elkhart County judicial officer subsequently found probable cause for this arrest and set a $150,000 bond. On September 30, 2024, the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office filed formal criminal charges in this investigation against Mr. Hoopingarner, in which he was charged with Attempted Armed Robbery, a Level 3 Felony (case no. 20C01-2409-F3-000039).

The Elkhart Police Department again thanks members of the public who submitted tips. Please be advised that under Indiana law an individual is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
