Driver dies after crash on U.S. 20 Bypass in South Bend

An investigation is underway following the death of a driver on the U.S. 20 Bypass in South Bend.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sep. 4. South Bend Police were dispatched to the westbound lanes near Miami Street in response to reports of a crash. Upon arrival, officers found a van that had veered off the roadway, colliding with the center median.

The driver was discovered unresponsive at the scene. Despite several lifesaving attempts, the driver was pronounced dead.

Preliminary evidence indicates the driver may have experienced a medical emergency before losing control of the vehicle.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, which is now under the investigation of the St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office.
