Severe storms expected until Thursday

Expect several rounds of severe thunderstorms before things calm down on Thursday. A storm system currently over southeastern Iowa is moving southeast, and depending on how it develops, it could reach Central Indiana.
Forecasters predict that the storm will most likely pass southwest of Indianapolis, but there is a chance that additional storms could develop into Thursday.
Joseph Nield from the National Weather Service says that predicting these storms is uncertain because each round of storms affects the environment and influences the next.
“Unfortunately, these situations tend to be highly uncertain because the subsequent round of storms is highly dependent on how the previous rounds of storms modify the environment,” says Nield. A lot of this is referred to as a now-casting problem: seeing where conditions are favorable and letting folks know what’s happening as we go along.”
Nield says it’s unusual for people in Indiana to face so many consecutive days of severe weather threats. He says the EF2 tornado that hit Madison County on Monday got stronger as it moved across the White River.
“This time of year especially, we tend to see setups like this where you’re not talking about strong cold fronts sweeping through, something that is far easier to monitor in time and space,” he says. We’re talking about a volatile air mass, a very hot and humid air mass that’s laid out across the upper midwest and the Ohio Valley.”
Nield says Indiana has had about 47 tornadoes this year compared to 54 last year. He says ensuring your warnings work and staying updated with the latest emergency information is important.
