Barricaded man surrenders, in custody after SWAT situation on Witmer Avenue

Elkhart Police // Alyssa Foster

A man is in custody after a SWAT standoff in the 100 block of Witmer Avenue in Elkhart.

It was around 8:15 a.m. on Sunday, July 28, when the Elkhart Police Department received a phone call from a concerned citizen about a possible ongoing domestic situation at a home in the 100 block of Witmer Avenue.

At about 9 a.m., Elkhart Police Department officers arrived and made contact with the female victim outside the residence. After making sure the victim was okay, officers attempted multiple times to call the male suspect out of the residence.

During the investigation, officers received information that the suspect was possibly armed and, based on information received, obtained a search warrant for the residence. The Elkhart County Regional SWAT team was contacted and activated as the subject was barricaded inside the residence and possibly armed.

During the incident, SWAT members deployed gas canisters inside the home. The male subject exited the residence at about 12:15 p.m. and surrendered to law enforcement.

Due to his exposure to the gas, the man, in his 50’s, was taken to the hospital for medical evaluation. The suspect was medically cleared and transported to the Elkhart County Jail. No other injuries were reported during the SWAT activation.
