The Nuclear Regulatory Commission held an environmental scoping meeting on Thursday to review plans to restart the Palisades Nuclear Plant in Van Buren County.

Community members gathered at the meeting to hear an overview for the project as well as to better understand its environmental review process and to ask questions. NRC environmental branch chief Daniel Barnhurst explained that if the plant restarts, there would be an additional workforce.

He stated that there may be some positive benefits of that, though there may be some negative parts of that. According to WSJM, some concerns were voiced, mentioning dangerous risks it brings to the community.

The NRC expects the environmental review draft to be completed next year with the final review coming out next summer.
