The Mishawaka City Council has voted in favor of rezoning land at the southeast corner of Fir and Douglas Roads to allow a Casey’s convenience store and gasoline station.
Real Estate Attorney Stephen Studer says as the area becomes more busy, another convenience store would be needed.
Critics of the rezoning plan fear a gas station at that location would endanger the new Juday Creek Water Wellfield. Studer says the same risks were deemed acceptable when the Family Express moved into the same intersection a few years ago.
Council members who voted in favor said the convenience store could fill a need due to an expected increase in traffic in the area once the Mishawaka Fieldhouse opens later this year.

It appears that there is no need for a public hearing on any new developments in Mishawaka or Granger. Every thing seems to be decided prior and nothing anyone says or thinks matters. For example : St Joe County Farm, new apts on Beacon Parkway and Fir, now the new convenience store on Fir and Douglas. County is same – new businesses in New Carlisle area. Even though it has a direct impact on our daily life and finances (taxes) our voice really don’t matter in any of these “improvements”.
