The Berrien County Board of Commissioners is opposing a possible change to a conservation program.

The program, popular amongst farmers, was discussed at a meeting on Thursday. It’s a state budget proposal that would eliminate local administration of the Michigan Agricultural Environmental Assurance Program, or MEAP, which is run by local conservation districts . MEAP pairs farmers with voluntary conservation technicians who advise the farmers, but the governor is looking to replace those technicians with a team of two dozen or so state employees.

WSJM reports that if the change is still part of the ongoing budget talks, commissioners will take up the resolution at the next meeting.
