Whooping cough mounting a comeback in Michigan

A lot of things have made a comeback since the pandemic…and one of them in Michigan isn’t exactly welcome.

Whooping cough is making a bounce-back in The Great Lakes State, with a bump in cases in recent weeks. The pertussis infection can be deadly for infants, and Bridge Michigan says while the cases are on the rise they are nowhere near the levels they were at during surges more than a decade ago.

As of June 15 there were 113 cases in the state, 3 more than were reported in all of 2023. It’s a far cry from the 1000-plus that were seen in 2013 and 2014, but there are indications that the spread this year is outpacing last year and the increase may tick those numbers higher in coming years.
