Cass County Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scammers

(Photo supplied/ABC 57)
A scammer posing as a Cass County Sheriff’s deputy is pressuring people to make payments over the phone. In the last 24 hours, multiple residents reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be “Lt. Justin O’Brien” with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
The scammer falsely claims the victim missed jury duty or has a warrant, demanding payment to resolve the issue. The calls appear legitimate, coming from a (269) area code.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents it never asks for money or threatens arrest over the phone. Payments are never requested through money transfer services like Walmart or Western Union.
If you receive a suspicious call, contact Cass County Dispatch at (269) 445-1560 to verify the caller’s identity. The sheriff’s office is investigating these scam calls.
