Man, 69, killed in officer-involved shooting at East Race & LaSalle in South Bend

A 69-year-old man was killed in an officer-involved shooting.

It happened around 6:40 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11.

South Bend Police officers were sent to East Race and LaSalle Street to a report of a man with a knife making threats.

The caller reported that the man had chased him with a knife and then stabbed his vehicle.

The preliminary investigation determined that during their encounter with the man with the knife, one officer unsuccessfully deployed his taser to disarm and detain the suspect.

A short time later, the second officer fired his handgun, striking the suspect.

The man was taken to the hospital for emergency medical treatment but died.

St. Joseph County, Indiana – Pursuant to an Interlocal Agreement between South Bend, Mishawaka and St. Joseph County Police Departments, investigators from both St. Joseph County Police and Mishawaka Police Departments are investigating an officer involved shooting that resulted in the death of a 69-year-old white male earlier this morning.

About 6:40 a.m. today South Bend Police officers were dispatched to a call near the East Race and LaSalle Street to a report of a man threatening with a knife. The caller reported that the man had chased him with a knife and then stabbed his vehicle. After obtaining further information from the caller, responding officers with the South Bend Police Department came upon that suspect. The preliminary investigation determined that during their encounter with the man with the knife, one officer unsuccessfully deployed his taser to disarm and detain the suspect. A short time later, the second officer fired his handgun, striking the suspect. The male suspect was transported to the hospital for emergency medical treatment. However, the 69-year-old white male died at the hospital. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.

We are withholding releasing names of those involved until next of kin have been notified.

The South Bend Police Department is fully cooperating with the investigation. County Police investigators are continuing to interview of multiple witnesses to the shooting, body camera video, and other evidence. Once all evidence has been processed and reviewed, St. Joseph County Police Detectives will forward all evidence, witness statements, videos, photographs, facts and findings to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for prosecutorial review of the incident.

Why do they insist on this euphemism of “officer-involved shooting?”
From where I sit, there is a huge difference in whether the officer is on the discharging or receiving end of the bullet. They don’t call assassination attempts “President-Involved shootings,” but technically they are.
Choosing euphemisms that blur the line between perpetrator and victim is propaganda, not news.
