The next phase of the 27 million-dollar M-51 project in Niles starts Wednesday.
MDOT says M-51/South 11th St. will be reduced to one lane in each direction, with the existing intersection of M-51 and US-12 being converted to a signalized intersection with indirect left turns. New curbs, sidewalks, and signal foundations are already in place but the work ahead will take about four weeks.
The official detour is Oak Street, M-60, and US-12, although 3rd Street is another option to consider to avoid the construction. The work is being done concurrent with the work on US-12, and is supporting more than 380 jobs.

I love when local bureaucrats claim things like “380 jobs.” Those are 380 jobs over a span of 2 years, and almost none of them are people who live locally. The entire construction crew has been brought in to Niles to do the work.
Just like the Indek power plant in Niles with a claim of 500 jobs, but only 17 people actually work there now that it’s finished.
