Michigan education leaders calling on state to do more about vape, marijuana use

the smoke is blowing in the air on a black background

Some Michigan education leaders are calling on the state to do more to combat vape and marijuana use in schools.

Detroit Superintendent Nikolai Vitti states that there has been an alarming rise in student consumption of pot edibles and use of vape pens recently.

Several school leaders stated that they have concerns about the edibles and vape pens, too. In Detroit, Vitti said the district has already recorded 745 drug-related offenses this year.

Recreational marijuana use is legal in the state for adults at least 21 years old, but school leaders say parents should be taking steps to ensure students do not have access to the product.

Vitti is urging policymakers to use marijuana taxes to help schools buy detection systems for both vape pens and marijuana, and he is calling on the state to forbid marijuana packaging that imitates non-marijuana candy to ensure marijuana products are not marketed toward children.

If only those teachers knew people who had direct contact with the kids, people used to instructing subjects like the dangers of drug use… It seems like if they only knew people like that, they could take care of this problem without involving the police.
