Lake Michigan beaches, piers and public access sites in Indiana will soon see life rings and other rescue equipment.

The Indiana House voted unanimously in favor of Senate Bill 253 which requires Northwest Indiana municipalities to have the equipment at each pier, public access point and public site along the shoreline beginning this summer.

The Lake Michigan Waterfront Safety Initiative, which started in July of 2022, is made up of family members of Indiana’s Lake Michigan drowning victims and the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project.

The bill includes safety measures including life rings, throw bags, lifeguard rescue tubes and 911 call boxes.

The bill is now headed to Governor Holcomb’s desk.
