Following an uptick of gun violence in South Bend in October and December of last year, the city reports an overall decrease in gun violence from 2022 to 2023.
The data was shared during Tuesday’s quarterly public safety meeting.
During all of 2023, gun violence incidents were down by more than 150 incidents compared to the year before. And, data shows nearly 200 more illicit guns were taken off the streets in 2023 than in 2022.
However, city leaders say any number of gun violence incidents above zero is too many. Michiana Crime Stoppers is working hard to solve cases, seeing a 34% increase in cases solved compared to in 2022.
So, Mayor Mueller says that if you’re thinking about committing a homicide in South Bend, it’s becoming a near-certainty that the case will be solved.
