A St. Joseph County Superior Court has dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by a University of Notre Dame professor against a student-run publication.
The suit, brought by sociology professor Tamara Kay, claimed that The Irish Rover’s coverage of her abortion-rights advocacy was false and defamatory.
The judge determined that Kay’s assertions were unfounded. In her lawsuit, Kay contested certain quotes attributed to her by the newspaper and argued that the publication had misunderstood the intent behind a sign on her door related to assisting students with healthcare access.
She maintained that her primary objective was to support victims of sexual assault.
Kay had sought unspecified punitive damages, citing alleged harassment, threats, and property damage she claimed to have experienced as a consequence of the articles.
