The local jobless rate is down, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

Both Elkhart and St. Joseph County’s unemployment rates dropped in August.

In Elkhart, the rate dropped from 5.2 percent to 4.4 percent.

In St. Joe County, is was a more modest decline, from 4.8 percent to 4.6 percent. Both rates are still higher than the statewide average of 3.4 percent.
