As many as four people were hurt in a shooting on South Bend’s west side.

Shots first rang out around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 16, near Huron and Philippa, but, according to South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski, there were as many as five different scenes spanning several blocks and at least 100 rounds fired.

The gunfire rang out as Mexican Independence Day celebrations were happening in the area.

The injuries suffered are believed to be non-life-threatening.

During a news conference with reporters, Ruszkowski said at least one person was also shot on Friday and that squad cars were beaten on with Mexican flags while officers were responding to that situation.

The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.

That old Polish neighborhood used to be a great place where people raised their children. Now the city limits is so dangerous, especially after dark. I personally don’t want me or my family shot or robbed.
