Michigan City High School student charged after allegedly bringing gun to school

At the end of the school day on Tuesday, Sep. 12, a Michigan City High school student provided information indicating that a 16-year-old boy may have brought a handgun into the school on Monday, Sep. 11. The student was said to have shown the weapon to several other students while in one of the restrooms. A Snapchat video was alleged to have been made during this time depicting the incident.

Based on the information that was received, an investigation began. School administrators, school staff the School Resource Officer, and a Michigan City police detective worked to verify the received information, determine what transpired, and identify everyone involved. Numerous interviews took place, evidence was collected, the Snap Chat video was obtained, and parental advisement was sent out via email and telephone to the parents of all high school students.

The results of the investigation showed that the 16-year-old student did bring a handgun into the school and displayed it to several other students while inside one of the restrooms. The Michigan City Police Department Crime Suppression Unit was contacted and tasked with locating the 16-year-old and taking him into custody. He was located at his home on Wednesday, Sep. 13. He was taken into custody after a brief foot chase.

The young man was charged as a Juvenile with Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun on School Property, Pointing a Firearm, Criminal Recklessness, and Child in Possession of a Firearm.

How does a 16 year old child get a firearm without their parents knowing ? Parents today need to pay closer attention to them until age 25.
