Crystal Gardens at Navy Pier to shutter its doors next year

The indoor garden at Chicago’s Navy Pier, which has always been free to the public, is set to be replaced.

Crystal Gardens is currently home to more than 80 palm trees, monstera plants, tropical plants and dancing water fountains. It’s housed inside a six-story glass atrium.

However, that is coming to an end next year when construction begins on something called “Illuminarium,” a 32,000 square-foot immersive virtual reality experience.

Its creators say it will project images, sounds and scents that transport visitors to another place.

City leaders have given the project their blessing. Though CNN reports a petition that started last month to save the garden has generated more than 18,000 signatures.
