A St. Joseph County woman was sentenced to 70 years in the death of a toddler.

Tearra Montgomery of Mishawaka received the sentence for the August 2018 death of 19 month-old Zyon Harris. She was tried in January, and found guilty last month.

Prosecutors say the child’s mom put him to bed then left for work, leaving him in Montgomery’s care.

Montgomery admitted to police that Zion was crying and, in an effort to get him to stop, she threw him against a wall, causing him to suffer a skull fracture, then , held his face into a robe, suffocating him.

Her sentence includes two felony counts of Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death, and a merged felony count of Battery.

Montgomery will serve her time in the Indiana Department of Correction.
