Indiana sheriff addresses political sign stealing

Stealing a political sign from someone’s property can lead to criminal charges, according to Sheriff Duane Burgess. He says that political signs are essential to the democratic process, can be costly, and tampering with them is illegal.
“We just want people to leave these signs alone and let them be,” Burgess says. “A lot of people have Ruing cameras on their doors and cameras around their house. Sometimes it’s fairly easy to catch these folks and get that property back.”
Burgess says In Indiana, theft occurs when someone knowingly or intentionally takes control of someone else’s property without permission, intending to deprive the owner of its value or use. If the stolen property is worth $750 or more, it is considered a Level 6 felony. If the value is less than $750, it is classified as a Class A misdemeanor.
“Theft of political signs, or any property for that matter, will not be tolerated in Johnson County,” he sai. Burgess. “We encourage our residents to respect the rights and property of others. If you’re caught taking or damaging signs, you will face legal consequences.”
Prosecutor Lance Hamner added, “The Prosecutor’s Office supports our Sheriff and other local law enforcement officers in ensuring your safety and in protecting your rights, including your right to display political signs should you so choose. We will prosecute any theft or vandalism related including any related to the political process. We hope that will not become necessary. Your local law enforcement agencies wish all a great campaign season in our state and in our great nation during this election year.”
