With Lead Poisoning Prevention Week just around the corner (October 20-26) and Halloween approaching, the St. Joseph County Department of Health is stepping up with two special events combining Halloween fun and health education. These events will take place on October 21 and October 24, offering local children the chance to enjoy Halloween treats while also getting screened for lead poisoning.
Partnering with several local organizations, including Anthem, La Casa de Amistad, Indiana Health Centers, CareSource, United Way of St. Joseph County, South Bend Venues, Parks, and Arts, and the Indiana Dinosaur Museum, the Department of Health is focusing on raising awareness about lead poisoning prevention. Children under six years old, who are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure, are encouraged to attend and get tested.
Lead poisoning remains a serious issue in St. Joseph County, where many homes were built before the 1978 ban on lead-based paint. Even small amounts of lead can cause lasting physical and cognitive damage to children. Since symptoms are not always visible, testing is the only way to detect lead exposure early and prevent further harm.
The events will also feature Halloween-themed activities, including games, face painting, balloon art, and free haircuts. Children who participate in lead testing will be entered into a raffle to win one of two grand prizes: tickets to the Indiana Dinosaur Museum or an ice-skating session at Howard Park.
Both children and adults are encouraged to come in costume for this safe, fun, and educational event.
First event: Monday, October 21, from 3-7 p.m. at OneRoof Southeast (405 E Dubail Ave, South Bend).
Second event: Thursday, October 24, from 3-7 p.m. at the Charles Black Center (3419 W Washington St, South Bend).
These events aim to keep Halloween fun while ensuring a healthy future for local children.
