Jacksonville Jaguars defeat Indianapolis Colts

The preceding dateline appears to be the bane of the Indianapolis Colts and their fans as once again, for the 10th year in a row, the Jacksonville Jaguars somehow managed to foil their attempts to win on the road in northeast Florida.

With Anthony Richardson out with an injured oblique, Joe Flacco starting in his stead, and a Jags team that had gone 0-and-4 coming into the game, there was little to be prognosticated about what the end result might be.

The end result: A 37-34 victory for the Jaguars off a last-minute field goal by kicker Cameron Little.

“It came down to really explosive plays,” said Colts head coach Shane Steichen. “Some on offense, some on defense. They had some too. It was a back-and-forth shootout game.”

The shooting started with the Colts hitting their target first, driving 12-plays for 71 yards resulting in a Flacco touchdown pass to Michael Pittman, Jr., his first of the year.

Things appeared to be firing on all cylinders with the elder veteran backup in at quarterback, especially since the Colts’ defense also came up holding the Jags to a field goal on their first drive.

The air slowly left the sails of the Colts as Jacksonville got their act together on offense with Trevor Lawrence knotting the score at 10-10 midway through the first quarter. It really came out of the sails when the Colts recovered a Jags fumble with a chance to get into field goal range late in the second quarter, only for Flacco to be sacked, fumble, and the Jags recover setting them up for a Cam Little field goal making it 13-10 at halftime.

The Colts never led again in the ballgame giving up long touchdowns on three of the Jags’ last five possessions, one of which was a 19-yard TD run by Tank Bigsby, who had a big day rushing 13 times for 101 yards.

The Colts somehow tied things up with 2:40 to go thanks to a 65-yard heave from Flacco to Alec Pierce for a touchdown. But, it left too much time on the clock as Lawrence drove the Jags into the range of Little who hit the game-winning 49-yard field goal.

“We’ve got to make the plays at the end when we need to make them,” Steichen said. “We had some things going, we established drives, but we have to continue drives. We can’t keep going out on 4th down.”

The Colts also lost right guard Will Fries midway through the 3rd quarter. Steichen said he injured his tibia, a bone in the lower leg, and offered thoughts to him and his family. Fries had surgery on his leg at a Florida hospital late Sunday evening.

Joe Flacco was 33-of-44 for the day throwing for 359 yards and three touchdowns. He did not throw an interception throughout the game. As a team, the Colts rushed for 99 yards without the services of Jonathan Taylor. Trey Sermon carried the ball ten times for 38 yards and a touchdown in Taylor’s absence.

Falling to 2-3, as well as remaining winless in the AFC South, the Colts have an even bigger hill to climb now for the rest of the season as they get ready to face another division rival in the Tennessee Titans next Sunday in Nashville.

The Colts are hoping to have both Anthony Richardson, Jonathan Taylor, and some other key defensive personnel back in the line-up for that match-up.
