On Saturday evening, September 14, 2024, the Goshen Police Department responded to a large crowd at Chicago Pike Plaza. Officers were deployed in full force after observing an unexpected gathering that led to concerns over overcrowding.
Police quickly shut down Chicago Avenue and stationed officers at every entrance to control access to the area and redirect traffic. Despite these efforts, gunshots rang out at 8:04 p.m. from within the crowded plaza.
Officers discovered a 20-year-old woman had been shot in the leg. Though her injuries were not life-threatening, she sought medical help independently and was later transported to a local hospital.
Conflicting reports about the shooter or shooters have complicated the investigation. One individual armed with a weapon was detained at the scene, but authorities have not confirmed if this person was responsible for the shooting.
Due to the expected large turnout, Goshen police had already coordinated with the Indiana State Police and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office for additional security and crowd control. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to gather details.
