Driver, distracted by food, crashes on State Road 19, two people injured

Two people were hospitalized after the car they were in was struck by a man distracted by food.

The collision happened around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 14, on State Road 19 at the westbound on-ramp to the U.S. 20 bypass.

A Chrysler Town and Country, driven by a 45-year-old Montpelier, Ohio man was traveling southbound on SR 19 and rear-ended a Nissan Sentra, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the police report, Bail was distracted while eating and failed to notice the red light at the intersection, resulting in the crash.

The Nissan Sentra, driven by a 38-year-old Warsaw man and his passenger had been stopped at the red light when it was struck from behind.

The driver who police say caused the crash was not hurt. However, the driver and passenger whose vehicle was struck complained of back and arm pain and were taken to Elkhart General Hospital for evaluation.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
