Newton County Sheriff’s deputy seriously injured after being shot while on duty

A Newton County Sheriff’s deputy is seriously hurt after being shot in a shootout with an Illinois suspect who made his way into Indiana Sunday night.
Illinois State Police have identified the suspect as 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clifton, Illinois. Police say they were chasing him and they believed he was holding someone hostage.
The chase went into Indiana at which time the Newton County Sheriff’s Department became engaged in the chase. The chase ultimately ended up back in Illinois and Roselius crashed in Sheldon, Illinois. Investigators believe Roselius got out of his vehicle and shot at police and Corporal Brandon Schrieber with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department was shot.
Roselius was killed. Schrieber was rushed to a hospital and then later taken to a trauma center.
No other people were found in Roselius’ vehicle after the chase.
Illinois State Police are leading the investigation. Once they are done examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, they will turn their findings over to the Iroquois County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Newton County, which has a population of nearly 13,900, is located in northwest Indiana. Its county seat, the town of Kentland, is about a 1 hour, 40-minute drive northwest of downtown Indianapolis. The Iroquois County, Illinois, village of Sheldon is about a 10-minute drive west of Kentland.
