Elkhart man thrown from ATV after collision in Cass County

A 29-year-old man from Elkhart was hospitalized after an ATV crash in Calvin Township.

Cass County Sheriff’s deputies were called around 7:50 p.m. on Sunday, Sep. 1, to the 67000 block of Tharp Lake Street on the report of the collision.

The man was driving the ATV at high speed through the yard of a home when he lost control after hitting a ditch. The impact caused the man to hit his head on the handlebars before being thrown from the vehicle, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The man, who police say was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was transported by ambulance to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Factors into the collision remain under investigation.

That’s not far from us. We’re 67000 block Bulhand Rd, and we have friends who live on Tharp in that area.
Any update on what the name of this guy is?

Here is the news release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. This is the only update we’ve received. – JZ

Cass County Sheriff Richard J. Behnke reports that on September 1, 2024, at approximately 1952 Hours, his Deputies responded to an ATV crash, at 67939 Tharp Lake St, Calvin Twp., Cass County, Michigan.

The initial investigation showed that the ATV driven by Thomas Klaer (29 YO of Elkhart, IN) was traveling through the yard of the residence at a high rate of speed. Klaer lost control of the ATV when he hit a ditch, which caused him to hit his head on the handlebars and separate him from the ATV. Klaer was transported by SMCAS ambulance to Elkhart Hospital General for injuries sustained in this crash.

A helmet was not worn at the time of the crash.

Assisting agencies on scene were Penn Fire and SMCAS Ambulance.

The crash remains under investigation
