Two men from Indiana died in a boating accident on a lake in eastern Illinois and a 7-year-old girl has been found safe.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Monday in a news release that police got a call about a distressed boater on Sunday August 18 at the LaSalle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area. When they got there, they saw a capsized vessel and found the girl on the shore with park visitors who helped her out. Those same visitors helped her contact her mother and grandmother.
Investigators say the girl was on a 17-foot Crestliner with her grandfather (a 53-year-old man from Merrillville) and great-grandfather (an 80-year-old man from Gary).
Both police and first responders from numerous agencies helped search for both of them and they were eventually recovered at about 7:45 pm. The LaSalle County Coroner pronounced them both dead at the scene.
The girl was wearing a life jacket. Both men were not wearing one.
They are trying to figure out what caused the vessel to capsize.
The lake is 2,000 acres and is near Marseilles, which is about 84 miles southwest of Chicago.
