Van Buren County confirms first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Michigan in 2024

(95.3 MNC)
Michigan’s first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis of the year has been confirmed in Van Buren County.
They say the horse was not vaccinated against EEE, which is spread through mosquito bites to animals and humans.
Horses are the main animal affected by the virus, which is usually seen in late summers to early fall and is not spread from animal-to-animal or animal-to-human.
Officials recommend putting animals under fans from dusk to dawn, as mosquitos aren’t strong flyers, and daytime is the most vital time to take precautions when mosquitos are out.
Humans can also protect themselves by  applying insect repellent, maintaining window and door screens and wearing long sleeved shirts and pants when outside.
