Even with high rankings in seatbelt use in the state, the Indiana Department of Transportation is working to increase awareness of buckling up and putting the phone down.

With the help of GEICO, INDOT has announced the addition of the Buckle Up Phone Down logo on its Hoosier Helper Safety Service Patrol vehicles to spread awareness of the initiative.

Indiana ranks high in seat belt use with 93 percent usage, but those who don’t buckle up are risking their lives, as almost half of all fatalities on Indiana roadways are those who were not wearing a seatbelt.

The second part of the initiative, focused on Indiana’s hands-free law, focuses on keeping drivers’ hands on the wheel and off of smartphones and tablets.

The Hoosier Helpers have attended to nearly 30,000 incidents so far just this year, encouraging drivers to focus on safe and efficient driving.
