The suspect fled from EPD officers and, during the suspect’s apprehension, an EPD squad car made contact with the suspect, causing what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries to the suspect. On August 3, 2024, at approximately 11:32 p.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 call of a burglary in progress in the 300 block of Harrison St with a possibly armed suspect. Elkhart Police Department officers dispatched and arrived shortly thereafter. Upon arrival, officers observed an armed male subject leaving the residence. Other officers entered an apartment and located an adult male victim with an apparent gunshot wound. Medics treated the victim (57 years old) at the scene and transported him to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Officers located the alleged male suspect in an alley in the 500 block of S 5th St. During the pursuit and apprehension of the suspect, an Elkhart Police Department squad car struck the male suspect and then struck a residence in the 500 block of S 5th St, causing minor damage to the residence. After the suspect was struck, he got up and allegedly attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody. The suspect (36 years old) was transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. As of the issuance of this release, he remains in custody at the hospital.

Officers recovered and took into evidence a firearm believed to be related to this incident. The recovered firearm was previously reported as stolen in Elkhart County. No officers were injured during the apprehension of the suspect. The Indiana State Police was contacted and will be investigating the crash portion of this investigation to include the squad car striking the suspect as well as the residence. The officer who was driving the involved squad car has been placed on paid administrative leave pending this investigation. We will release further information as we are able to do so.
