Biden calls for major Supreme Court reforms, lawmakers weigh in with opinions on plan

President Biden wants to reform the Supreme Court, but many lawmakers are weighing in on what they think of his plan to do that.
Biden wants term limits of 18 years for Supreme Court justice, a binding code of conduct, and a constitutional amendment regarding limits when it comes to presidential immunity saying that “no one is above the law.” Many Republicans feel that Biden’s reforms are in fact just that.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said that Biden’s proposal is “dead on arrival” in the U.S. House. Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell echoed that sentiment in the Senate. It has the support of Vice President Kamala Harris who is now at the front of the Democratic ticket for president.
“They are trying to intimidate the Supreme Court,” said Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN-5th), who represents parts of Indiana immediately north of Indianapolis.
“They know they are doing something that was never really designed by our constitution. It’s unbelievable what they are doing with regulations and rules. This is a deterrence to advance a radical socialist agenda,” she added on Fox News.
Americans’ views on the Supreme Court are close to an all-time low. A new Gallup poll found that 43-percent of Americans approve of the job the high court is doing. Several justices have faced accusations of ethics violations. The court has ruled on several historic cases over the last two years, including the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Biden argues that “extreme opinions” from the Supreme Court in recent years have undermined long-established civil rights protections.
