Deadline to choose running mate coming quickly for Harris

The clock is ticking for Democrats, both on the national and local level.
President Joe Biden announced he would step down from the 2024 presidential election Sunday, quickly endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris. As of now, Harris is the sole candidate for the party’s nomination, but that leaves the question of who will Harris choose as a running mate.
Democrats have a deadline to put pen to paper and make their ticket official here in the Hoosier State.
The Indiana Secretary of State’s Office says the Indiana Democratic Party has until Tuesday, September 10th, at 12:00 p.m. eastern time to finalize the party’s candidates for president and vice-president.
The Democratic National Convention takes place in Chicago next month, and it will be at that event, in theory, that the party should settle on their ticket.
This is the rule for what to do when a party’s candidate no longer appears on the ballot, as provided by the state Secretary of State’s Office:
IC 3-10-4-6 Cessation of candidacy, Sec. 6.
(a) If a nominee for President or Vice President of the United States ceases to be a candidate before the nominee’s ticket is officially certified, then that fact and the name and the state of residence of the nominee’s successor, if any, shall be certified in the same manner as the original nominee and the successor’s name shall be printed upon all ballots.
(b) If a nominee for President or Vice President of the United States ceases to be a candidate after the nominee’s ticket has been officially certified, then that fact and the name and state of residence of the nominee’s successor, if any, shall be certified in the same manner as the original nominee. However, the ballots must reflect the original nominee’s name, and any vote cast in the election for the original nominee shall be considered a vote for the successor.
Monday, September 16th is the deadline for Indiana counties to print ballots.
Indiana’s Democrat Party already gave it’s official statement of support for the Biden-Harris ticket during the state convention July 13th. After the president’s announcement Sunday, the Indiana Democratic Party gave it’s official endorsement of Vice President Harris.
