One person was killed in a crash involving a car and a moving train just before midnight on Wednesday, July 17.

Crews from both St. Joseph and Elkhart Counties were still working the scene early Thursday morning at the crossing at Ash Road near Lincolnway in Osceola.

Police believe the vehicle ignored the engaged railroad crossing arm at the tracks on County Line Road. It was on fire when officials arrived, and a deceased person was found inside the vehicle after the flames were extinguished.

St. Joseph County Police have not released the name of the victim, said to be a 36 year-old female.

Norfolk Southern is working with the St. Joseph County Police on the investigation.
