Four people were hurt in a crash on South Bend’s west side.

The collision happened just after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, at the intersection of Walnut and Colfax Sreets following an attempted traffic stop.

Investigators say a South Bend Police Officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Matthew James Dean, 33, of North Liberty. However, Dean did not pull over, instead, accelerating southbound on Walnut St., where he blew through a red light at the intersection of Walnut and Colfax.

They say he struck a Ford Explorer, driven by a South Bend woman, and a Jeep, driven by a South Bend man, that rolled over. The Ford Explorer then struck a Pontiac, driven by another South Bend woman.

A Mishawka woman in Dean’s vehicle was critically injured and taken to the hospital. Dean and two others were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team.
