Former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for this year’s presidential contest, notified two of the favorite finalists on the public’s short list Monday that they would not be his choice. Florida Senator Marco Rubio and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, both presidential candidates themselves in the past, were informed that they had not been chosen to be Trump’s new running mate.
Fox News reports that J.D. Vance will be his running mate.
Vance, a 39 year-old Senator from Ohio, adds a much-needed injection of youth into a campaign that has been plagued with talk of candidates who may be too old for some voter’s tastes. He also shores up the GOP election effort in a crucial state for the general election. Vance has served less than two years in the U.S. Senate. He’s a former U.S. Marine who served in Iraq, and the author of Hillbilly Elegy.
Trump’s previous Vice President, former Indiana Governor Mike Pence, famously had a falling-out with Trump at the end of his term in the White House.
Trump’s nomination was voted on Monday afternoon, with his home state of Florida being the one that provided the last of the delegates required to put him over the top. His son Eric declared that state’s delegates for his father.
