A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with a credit union robbery in South Bend.

On Wednesday, July 3, South Bend Police responded to the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union in the 3400 block of Portage Avenue on the report of a robbery.

Upon arrival, officers and detectives began collecting initial statements and evidence to develop a suspect description.

Not long after the reported robbery, officers were able to locate the suspect, David Hatmaker, 38, outside a business near the credit union.

Through further investigation, officers learned Hatmaker was the suspect in a vehicle theft at a South Bend car dealership earlier in the day. Hatmaker was near the stolen vehicle when he was apprehended.

Officers located a large amount of cash, suspected methamphetamine and a syringe in Hatmaker’s possession.

On Friday, July 5, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office charged Hatmaker with the following:
– Robbery
– Auto Theft
– Possession of Meth
– Unlawful Possession of a Syringe

Hatmaker is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
