A man had his initial hearing after being arrested for arson last week.

Abraham Villegas was arrested by Elkhart city police in the early hours of June 22 when the owner of the Marathon Gas Station on S. Main St. said a man was seen trying to light a gasoline well on fire.

The Goshen News says security footage was reviewed by police, showing the man taking trash from the bins, pulling the nozzle out of a pump and saturating the trash with gasoline before igniting it and throwing it into the well and fleeing.

Shortly after, another officer located a police vehicle on fire, and Vellegas was seen in the area carrying a fuel canister. Villegas was transported to the jail on two counts of arson, resisting causing bodily injury and interfering with reporting a crime.
