If you think you’re seeing more fireflies than usual, you’re right.
There’s a resurgence in fireflies on both sides of the state line, thanks to an early spring followed by drought-like conditions.
Ben Pfeiffer of the Firefly Conservation and Research group tells Bridge Michigan projects a continued decline in the bugs, calling the numbers seen in the skies near water and wooded areas “likely the best that it’s ever going to be.”
Overall, the firefly population nationwide has been on the decline in recent years. Michigan is one of the states with a huge population of the 15 species of fireflies as this summer gets underway.
