The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office has received reports in the past several days from citizens who say they’ve been contacted by someone claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office.
The caller, using the name “Lt. Justin O’Brien” and a (269) area code number, typically informs recipients of warrants or missed jury duty.
Officials emphasize that the Sheriff’s Office does not demand money over the phone or threaten arrests for non-payment.
They also do not accept payments through money transfer services like Walmart or Western Union.
Residents who suspect a scam involving the Sheriff’s Office are urged to verify the caller’s identity by contacting the Berrien County Police Dispatch non-emergency number at (269) 983-3060.
